In support of Iranian political prisoners on hunger strike
I shall be released (Bob Dylan)
Ezzatollah Sahabi, an Iranian scholar, humanitarian, democracy activist, politician and former parliament member, spent a total of 15 years in prison both before and after the 1979 Islamic revolution. After going into a coma Shahabi died on May 31, 2011 at the age of 81.
Haleh Sahabi, Iranian humanitarian and democracy activist, was the daughter of Ezzatollah Sahabi. Sahabi was a member of the "Mothers for Peace" group and a campaigner for women's rights. On 5 August 2009 she was arrested along with others in front of the parliament during President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's second inauguration swearing-in ceremony. She was temporary released for her father's funeral in May 2011 where during a scuffle with security forces she was hit in the upper body and died of cardiac arrest on the spot along side her father. The authorities seized Haleh?s body immediately after death, and the authorities forced the family to attend a speedy burial during nighttime -- against Iran's cultural and religious customs.
Following Haleh's tragic death at her father's funeral, Reza Hoda Saber, an Iranian journalist, translator and political activist, who was serving several prison terms since 2000, died while on a hunger strike in prison protesting the death of Haleh Sahabi.Hoda's cause of death was due to beatings he received when he sought medical treatment as his condition worsened.
And now, 12 other political prisoners have commenced an "indefinite" hunger strike to show their outrage and protest over the killing of two fellow political prisoners Hoda Saber and Haleh Sahabi.
These are:
Bahman Ahmadi Amooei, Hasan Asadi Zeidabadi, Emadoddin Baghi, Emad Bahavar, Ghorban Behzadian-Nejad, Mohammad Davari, Amir-Khosro Dalir-Sani, Feizollah Arabsorkhi, Abolfazl Ghadyani, Mohammad Javad Mozaffar, Mohammad Reza Moghisseh, Abdollah Momeni.
We ask that Mr. Ahmed Shaheed, who was elected June 17 2011 as the special human rights reporter for Iran by the United Nation, to immediately intervene in this recent act of protest in order to investigate the total disregard and fundamental abuse of human rights in Iran.
