
Biography
Pandit Ravi Shankar was an Indian sitarist and composer. A virtuoso of the sitar, he became the world's best-known exponent of Indian classical music in the second half of the 20th century, influencing musicians both within India and across the globe.
He was awarded India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1999. He is also the father of American singer Norah Jones and British-American musician and sitar player Anoushka Shankar.
Throughout his career, he collaborated with violinist Menuhin, filmmaker Satyajit Ray, and George Harrison and the Beatles. He was invited to Iran by Farah Pahlavi for a performance at the Shiraz Arts Festival before the revolution.
